About

The Ancient Prayer of the Desert

The Jesus Prayer is one of the oldest and most beloved prayers in Christian tradition, with roots reaching back to the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the third century. It is the central prayer of Eastern Orthodox spirituality and hesychasm, a form of contemplative Christian prayer practice.

The prayer appears in various forms throughout Christian history. The fullest form, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner," combines invocation, confession of faith, and supplication. Its simplicity belies its profound spiritual depth.

In hesychasm, the Jesus Prayer is prayed repeatedly in rhythm with one's breathing and heartbeat, becoming a continuous conversation with God. This practice of unceasing prayer echoes St. Paul's admonition to "pray without ceasing."

The prayer emphasizes both the divinity of Jesus (Son of God) and our human condition (sinners in need of mercy). It is a profound expression of faith, humility, and dependence on God's grace.

Choose a peaceful setting where you can focus without distractions.

Assume a Prayer Posture

You can stand, sit, or kneel. Many practitioners find that standing or sitting comfortably aids concentration.

Breathe Consciously

Pray the first part on the inhale: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God." Pray the second part on the exhale: "have mercy on me, a sinner."

Continue with Intention

Let the prayer flow naturally, allowing your mind and heart to unite in this ancient petition. Focus on the presence and mercy of Christ.

Let God Work

This is not about achieving a state of consciousness, but about opening yourself to God's grace and mercy.
